I don't know whether the old engine would be faster than the new, for free tables.
However, if you use Visual FoxPro, in many cases you will use additional features, not available in old FoxPro DOS, for example, referential integrity (implemented through triggers). This will cause Visual FoxPro additional work.
For that reason, I would strongly recommend Visual FoxPro rather than FoxPro - I can not imagine myself working once again without referential integrity (among other features).
