>Hmmmm ... maybe you missed the point of my joke. The majority of Americans speak only English. I don't know about the Brits or Spaniards, but I've been to France a couple of times and was amazed at how many are very fluent in English. And, in the parts of France that I visited, being close to Italy, many spoke Italian as well (and the Italians spoke French). Seems to me to be a very European thing to be fluent in more than one language. That's just not so here in the U.S.

I've foud the French to be pretty bad at speaking English. The reason why you encountered so many French anglophones is probably because you doin't speak French, thereby having to seek them out. I've found many examples of English that speak fluent French but few vice versa (and when they do they sound ever so fraanch) :-)

Americans have a disadvantage: even the french words you know are mis-pronounced, e.g. Notre Dame (Noter Dayme), Croisant (crwa-SAHNT instead of CWRA-sahn) :-)
