Greg,

>I need some information on the current logged in user to customize the display. I need a key that will be used to control what information will/can be displayed. Adding a field to the User table seems like an easy solution as the key is known when the user is created. What would be the best way to access this field for the current user or is there a better approach?

Have you looked into the current user/role security model to see if that can work for you? This is specifically what it's designed for.
