It does not happen if no wildcard is used. Suppose there are two files 'effe.htm' and 'effe.html'. The command 'del effe.htm' will not erase 'effe.html'. So I think that 8.3 format is not the crux here. Moreover, I expect DOS to be aware of long filename format on my WinXP machine (it also happens on WinNT).

Problem with all those utilities is that they cost money.
