Some of the newer programs (including Studio 10 i believe) have a feature where u can dump VHS from the player thru the PC directly to a DVD burn. Unattended and your tape doesnt fill your harddrive 10 minutes in. Great for archiving. And Studio allows u to record portions of a DVD to mpegs so that u can pick and chose when building a movie. The first version of MSFT's movie maker would not output to DVD format. I'm guessing the newer versions do.
