I have a number of applications which are entirely dependent on grids, and can't imagine any other way of presenting the information to my users. (and I don't think it merely reflects a lack of imagination on my part.)
Grids can be nasty, specially if you have odd controls in them - but then, I've written a few huge forms (1000 pixels across) where the Big Wide Grid took more than half the space, and still had to be scrolled both ways. And guess what - the user says that's exactly what he wanted. And I've even added a few tricks to it, like each of a certain range of columns having its own clipboard, writing into several other tables from this grid, etc etc.
Grid can be wild, but outruns tamer horses when you ride it properly :).
