You haven't been to Eastern Europe during the Warsaw Pact times. For my taste, Romania had the worst coffee, then USSR, and Hungary was close even in '95, but at least you could order "dupla presszo" (double espresso) to have a decent quarter-cup of coffee.
Haven't tried the British coffee, though. I may change my mind.
