I believe we need DWI laws. Here in Canada, the incidence of drinking and driving is on a downward slope. I think it's probably due more to education and folks like MADD than to the laws, but like you I wouldn't want the laws repealed. The laws aren't there to stop the problem, only to mitigate it and hopefully to allow the police to stop someone before he/she kills somebody else.

Without such a law, they wouldn't be able to stop someone until he caused damage or death.
