>>Sure it's the person rather than the weapon, but without guns, and with thugs only armed with steak knives, I think we'd have a lot less of a problem. I take it you disagree; I mean, as a cop, you'd be just as concerned, and you feel you'e have just as many homocides to deal with if nobody had a gun, but everybody was still allowed to carry a pen?

>I'm saying homicide is "the unlawful taking of a human life with malice aforethought" at common law and that means the person who does the killing does it after thinking about it, then making a plan. Gun control laws only work to limit the law abiding citizen's access to a firearm. Those firearms are purchased to protect people from those same criminals who would have a gun anyway. The emphasis needs to be on stronger sentencing, not on gun removal.

>By definition, criminals don't follow the laws. Why would you think a law that doesn't get enforced, or doesn't penalize the perpetrator would work?

We just had a situation here in Canada where a gun collector kept his collection in a safe in his home. He actually took extraordinary precautions beyond what any normal person might. When he was on vacation, his place was broken into and the safe (though it apparently took 2 days) was broken into also. All the guns are now on the street being used to kill people.

We've also, in the past has shooting ranges broken into and guns stolen that were subsequently used to kill people.
