I have it, and some of my brothers. But until quite recently, I didn't know it was called "Tourette's syndrome", nor did I know that any people outside my family had it.

Tourette's syndrome:
  • Is not contagious.
  • Is not dangerous. The effects, however, can be quite unpleasant, because of the reaction of society.
  • Not curable - affected people have it for life. However, symptoms tend to reduce with age.
  • Used to be considered some sort of madness. Nowadays, it is attributed to an excess of neurotransmitters, especially dopamine, I think.

Victims have a tendency to do all sorts of useless movements, for example, to distort the face in strange ways, touch things, etc.

A Google search will give you lots of sites with much more details.

    Greetings,

    Hilmar.
Difference in opinions hath cost many millions of lives: for instance, whether flesh be bread, or bread be flesh; whether whistling be a vice or a virtue; whether it be better to kiss a post, or throw it into the fire... (from Gulliver's Travels)
