I have it, and some of my brothers. But until quite recently, I didn't know it was called "Tourette's syndrome", nor did I know that any people outside my family had it.
Tourette's syndrome:
Is not contagious.
Is not dangerous. The effects, however, can be quite unpleasant, because of the reaction of society.
Not curable - affected people have it for life. However, symptoms tend to reduce with age.
Used to be considered some sort of madness. Nowadays, it is attributed to an excess of neurotransmitters, especially dopamine, I think.
Victims have a tendency to do all sorts of useless movements, for example, to distort the face in strange ways, touch things, etc.
A Google search will give you lots of sites with much more details.
Greetings,
Hilmar.
