I think the combination of the next version of .Net with LINQ ... (read more here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/future/linq/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dndotnet/html/linqprojectovw.asp) and smaller versions of SQL Server will work out pretty well.
