It is quite complicated, and that is the main reason that it is recommended NOT to use General fields. Better alternative are to keep the files as separate files on disk, and just store the filenames (this is the usual recommendation), or to store the contents in a memo-binary field. The other reasons are that the General field takes up too much space, and that you can easily go above the VFP limit of 2 GB.

There have been discussions here in the past, on getting the data out of the General fields; IIRC, this requires a separate analysis for different file types.
