Several years ago, and with Fox 2.6, I had a SCAN construct that failed to restore the original table, the only solution was add SELECT the original table before the ENDSCAN, that made me distrust of that SCAN and changed it for a WHILE (only in that case). I used and still use SCAN widely and I never saw the problem again EVER, but I would not be surprised if Michael had this problem too.
