Is it "Mongol history month"?

We get the same kind of thing (change name at top of list) during "Black history month".

>I'm reading this great book called "Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World". In it, Jack Weatherford describes the Mongol defeat and occupation of Baghdad in 1257. It wasn't defeated and occupied again until 2003 by the Brits and US.

>Some other neat tidbits:
>- Mongols had the largest ever empire in land mass, stretching from Korea to Poland and Russia to China.
>- they were illiterate, but recognized the value of writing to organize and document and hired Chinese scribes to do this
>- they were sort of multi-cultural. They let conquered people keep their religion and some Mongols became Christian, Muslim and other religions
>- having a military completely based on light calvary, made them extremely mobile and hard for other armies to fight
>- the compound bow meant that they had longer range than most other militaries
>- though a rustic civilization (based on herding with no cities) they would quickly embrace any military or other technique that could give them an advantage be it gunpowder, catapult, currency or writing
>- the introduced standardized currency for their entire empire
>- used paper money backed up by precious metals and instituted a monetary policy to protect its value
>- they saw no honor in dying in battle and felt no disgrace or cowardice in running away when they couldn't win
>- they alway let the enemy defeat themselves with their own weaknesses (if they were greedy they would feigh retreat then slaughter the pursuers when they were tired, if they had a castle they would divert a river and flood it)
>- they believed in the protection of diplomats and embassdors
>- their civilization and economy was weak because it relied on constant conquering and plunder
>- they could not defeat near neighbours such as the vietnamese and indians becuase the warm temperature made their bows weak and horses sick
>- they would purposely kill and harrass civilians so that they would spread exaggerated stories of how scary they were as a form of psycological warfare
>- as above they would use panic and drive the civillian populations towards the large cities and castles, this would slow the armies travelling to confront them and would overwhelm the resources of the cities and castles
