An easy way to remember this is to remember the origin: the manual typewriter.

Remember, you had to whack a lever to get to the next line and back to the beginning of the line? Remember how just a light tap would advance to the next line without the return to the beginning of the line? That's the difference between a line feed and a line feed with carriage return.

Computers still maintain the difference, sometimes. But where they maintain that difference varies.

When you really need a line feed with a return to the beginning of the line, remember to give that lever a full whack. ;-)
