>>Well, to be fair, in spite of the Conservative rhetoric, the scandalous government was gone when Gomery caused the corrupt folks to be turfed out. I know Harper liked to quote bits and pieces of the Gomery report, but he seemed to always forget the part about how Martin (and his current cabinet) were all absolved of any wrong doing. Or is this another one of those "I believe in the Gomery report - except for this bit here and that bit there that I don't like."

>I'm not so sure Canadians believe all the bad apples are gone. Especially after several new scandals hit the news after Gomery.

It's abundantly clear that many Canadians do not believe all the bad apples are gone. And they may be right, but remember that Martin was not part of Cretien's little cadre of bad apples. He was on the outs, and may well not have had any idea what was going on.

Again, though, watching one of the Conservative ads, the expected inference was that if a liberal party member was named in an investigation, he must be guilty. Remember the ad? "The liberals say they are not corrupt but they have been named in an investigation." Not exact, I'm sure, but as close as I remember it. And this, after Harper, on TV being asked if he would instantly tell any minister to resign if named in an inquiry, answered that he would not necessarily do that because the person may not be guilty of any wrong-doing. After calling for everybody's heads for so long with nothing more than an implication of wrong-doing, I found this extremely hypocritical.

Besides, any party leader who yells about ethics the way Harper does, but would have the likes of Peter McKay as his second in command, knowing the incredible lack of ethics McKay displayed as leader of the PC party, is not someone I'd want guarding my back.

>>So, if I understand this correctly, the reason we need change is that our greatness is rooted in our history and our values?

>No I didn't link the need for change to the quote I provided. I was countering Evan's rather specious 9 year-old quote about how Harper feels about Canada.

The quote itself made the link.

Having said all that, the result was a foregone conclusion. I don't know what morons were responsible for the Liberal campaign, but they should all be taken out and shot. I can't remember ever having seen a worse run and more incompetent campaign (unless it was Harper's first campaign a couple of years ago - on second thought, no. Not even that one).
