I don't know why BC dropped eye care, but I have a good idea why LOTS of medical procedures were dropped in Ontario, including eye care (except for the elderly and those with certain medical situations like me, who has a transplant).
The Federal government used to pay for about 35% of provincial health care costs. That fell to around 12% (maybe it was 16%) when all the deficit-eradicating belt-tightening was going on. This, of course, left the provinces in a very bad state. In Ontario, where virtually every conceivable medical procedure was covered (except vanity cosmetic procedures) they "de-listed" lots of such procedures. Eye care was eliminated after the big de-listing was done, I suppose as further fine-tuning.
Still, in my opinion, beat the alternative of dropping health care altogether.
A standard visit to an optometrist (I mean a proper eye doctor) costs $75.00
