I was going to say it's as bad as English, but then I realized we have diferent terms for stallion/horse/mare/etc. in Romanian too. The male term was used when the context could apply to any of the other.
In elementary school I learned a poem in Russian (that I still remember!!), about лошадь, kapoba, etc. I guess all are female terms...
