This was surprising to me. I've never really known what income level constitutes 'middle-income' in the U.S. Now, according to the census (comparing income growth 2001-2003 after inflation adjustment), I know:

The poorest one-fifth of families, the report said, had an average income of $16,780 from 2000-03, while the top fifth of families had an average income of $122,150 more than seven times as much. Middle-income families' average income was $46,875.

It appears that 50,000-80,000/yr is upper middle-income. That is a wide spread.
