Hi Terry,
for the latest comm projects (different communication methods and targets, but same customer) I went with XmlHttp. There ALWAYS was security to enter/change the picture DURING development, so my guess was that with XmlHttp I would be in better position to respond to security changes/special needs.
No hard facts/interesting war stories and not even a scholarly comparison of all their features [I was under pressure to get something rolling fast], but I haven't been sorry yet.
One other thing: if you ever have to work with web services, think at least twice before deciding to use the SOAP toolkit.
