Apparently this isn't new- controversy began in late 2004. Apparently Zonealarm phones home to check for new versions etc and apparently does it even if you say not to. Though encrypted, apparently the size of message is too small to reveal much.
However, I intend to replace my zonealarm with a dlink securespot:
