I took your advice and changed the connection string. This one worked in the end.Of course with the brackets.
Sample
add key="maindata\Connection" value="server=mypcname\sqlexpress;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=SouthwindSQL" /

The object generated successfully. Now I can move on!
