Not technically, but I believe it has to do with the way VFP draws its forms. I don't believe VFP controls are true Windows controls and therefore don't respond as effectively as the true Windows controls do. But, the api call forces the OS to redraw the form in its newly updated state. Otherwise, VFP waits for an opportunity (an idle state) to draw it. When dealing with progress bars, idle states are typically not available or else you wouldn't need the progress bar. <s>
I'm sure others here could chime in with a more technical (or maybe even correct) answer, though.
