But then, where does God fit in all this. If I take the bible as a collection of allegories written by men, then why would I believe in God? If God didn't do the stuff the bible purports, then what did He do?

As I said before, I am an atheist myself, but looking at it from the other point of view, I just can't see believing in God if, in fact, one assumes that the bible is not the word of God.

God becomes some kind of extraneous fifth wheel, not really required for anything. Doesn't seem like much of anything to worship in that case.
