I live on an island 3 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. To be specific, Kwajalein Island, Kwajalein Atoll, in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Our atoll is located near the equator in the South Pacific, and just across the date line. It is about 2,500 miles SW of Hawaii, 2,500 miles SE of Japan, and 2,000 miles north of Austrailia. Out in the middle of nowhere.

Kwajalein and several other islands and atolls are leased from the Marshallese government. It is a missile testing range.

Vehicles are for official business. The rest of us ride bicycles for transportation.

The local Marshallese people have a group-oriented culture. They have very large, extended families. Some of the people still live on the outer islands much as they did centuries ago. However, many migrate to the island of Ebeye, because of jobs on Kwajalein.

An atoll is the rim of an extinct volcano. Kwajalein is the largest atoll in the world. All along the rim, flat coral islands pop up. The largest island in Kwajalein Atoll is Kwajalein Island. Ebeye is another one, and so is Roi-Namur, etc.
