Seriously, I think there is - or should be, at least - a principle in justice, that a punishment should be proportional to the crime. It isn't fair to punish someone who steals a few loafs of bread out of hunger, to 10 years of slave labor (like, rowing boats). This was done at some times, for lack of workers. Some punishment might be considered, but in this example, the punishment is way out of proportion with the crime.

By the same token, condemning someone to an eternity in hell is simply unfair, for the same reason. Quite obviously, this sort of punishment is out of proportion with any crime.

I am quite sure that we will receive some sort of punishment in the afterlife, for our misdeeds on Earth. But an eternity in hell? Impossible.
