I think that if there were a real home security need in either the U.S. or Canada, both sides would immediately support the other. If not simply for being neighbors.

>I don't doubt that at all. I'm just saying it's a flawed viewpoint for people to take. Especially if they base this view on the situations surrounding the Iraq war. I expect U.S. citizens are divided on the issue - to what percent, I can't imagine. I only hope it's a majority in our favour. I'd hate to think that most Americans feel that Canada wouldn't stand by their side in time of real need (as was done during 911 and after Katrina).
>
>>I understand your position clearly, however the question was not what you think nor what is fact or fiction, but rather the opinion of the average American on whether Canada is still the primary country that America can count on for support. How Americans see it may or may not be correct, but it may well be the general consensus. It is what I have heard from people all over the country. Yet that may not be the viewpoint of the average American.

>>>Glad to see the 'probably incorrect'. My own feeling is that it is completely incorrect. Declaring a war for spurious reasons on a country unable to defend itself doesn't sound much like a 'time of need' to me. After 911, Canada was right there to send troops into Afghanistan, and rightly so, imho. Given another 911, Canada will be right there again. Of course, now that Stephen Harper is in power, we are more likely to step up to the plate for even the most inane reasons. I have a feeling we now have a prime minister who will yell 'How high, SIR!' when George yells "Jump!" It would be nice if he proves me wrong, but there is nothing in his past to make me hopeful.

>>>>>>>>Of course as a dutch citizen knew this, but my case is that specifically the US were dragged into WWII rather than they did liberate europe because they were our allies at the beggining of the war. I have great respect for all people who liberated europe. In fact just before the 60th anniversary of the liberation in may 2005 I was at Toronto Pearson airport taking a flight back home. There were a lot of Canadian veterans taking a flight to europe. I'll always remeber those two old verterans who must have been in their 80's sitting to the opposite of me. I respectfully saluted them. They smiled back and appreciated the intention.

>>>>>>>I have NO doubt that you and your fellow Dutch citizens are very respectful and greatful for the allies' help during the war. In fact, the way you treat of *our* veterans puts much of our own citizens' efforts to shame.
