Rick,

>When I do what you suggest and set the controls visible property to true it works fine. I can pull the primary key value from the control when I add a new child record. However, when I set the visible property to false (which is what I would like) this control returns an empty value instead of the primary key of the parent. Should I use a different method to obtain the primary key of the parent. I really don't want to display this value on the form.

I don't know the scenario you're using it in, but I would try to get the information from the parent business object.
