>>Historically speaking, it may have been the best if the world gave communism a chance to compete, and fail or succeed on its own merits. Instead, as soon as WWI ended, there was a joint effor to conquer the fledgling USSR, which 1) failed, 2) gave them siege mentality for decades to come, and 3) helped prop the militaristic, authoritarian and utterly tyrannic Joseph Dzhugashvili (self-nicknamed Stalin after steel). Had this capitalism's fear of an idea not resulted in an outright war, we may have seen a healthy competition between the systems in terms of human rights, levels of democracy, technology etc, instead of armament race. Seventy years wasted.

>Communism was tried right here in the US. When Jamestown was founded, it was basically a commune and the people almost died until they decided to give everyone their own plots of land so they could do as they wished (see capitalism). The rest is history, as they say.

>Communism has never worked. It is inherently flawed at any level beyond theory.

I've heard this sort of tactic before (and repeatedly from you) - point out a bad example, which is somehow sufficient to disprove the whole theory.

Socialism is what you make it. The Jamestown example was an experiment in an utopia, and of course it didn't work. Specially the experiment with farmers not owning their land hasn't - throughout the Eastern bloc it was tried out and led to bad crops, animals not being fed regularly etc. It's been tried in my country, and ended up in a mix of privately owned land (maybe about 80%, with limited size of land per person - no more than 10ha), some agricultural enterprises with employees, and some land being joined in cooperatives. The end result was that the land owned by farmers yielded about 30% more in the average - but then some of these enterprises were really good. Some of them were my customers, and they were well organized, maintained their equipment properly, invested - and then there were some which just survived somehow, or didn't.

Though, it's amazing that with all that religious belief in "communism can't work", the capitalist world joined so fast to suppress the idea, without letting it fail on the market of ideas for its own flaws.
