The south turned towards the Democratic Party because of Lincoln. When President Harry Truman introduced his Civil Rights Platform at the 1948 Democratic Presidential Convention, southerners walked out. They became known as “The States Rights Party” or “Dixiecrats”. Because of the Civil Rights action of the 1960’s the Democratic South became Republican.
