I have several applications with fairly small databases and tables installed on a network so that multiple users can access the data. To date I have not used SQL Server or any other backside data server. However I am beginning to wonder if I should explore these more complex arrangements. How does one decide if a backside server arrangement is necessary or worth the bother? What kind of things should I think about and would MySQL be a suitable server to experiment with?

Thanks for any insights.
