In transaction based systems, there is a logical field for active/inactive employees and a history transaction record that records the action itself and the date. Most employee systems which have the ability to display all previous actions (hired, promoted, agreements signed, counselled, terminated at will, etc via a transaction file which can be printed out per employee). If you are not required to have a transaction based system then a logical field for active/inactive (nice for filtering reports as well) and the date should suffice. I would
not make the active/inactive field part of the tab order though using a checkbox or Y/N (to prevent accidental changes) but make it only modifiable via a command button or option group, etc outside of the tab order.
