Does any of your friends or family members have experience with graphics? Developers tend to be bad artist <s>, so getting help by someone experienced is usually a better idea. One reason behind that is that any "cool" application look is consistent. IF you pick any of the modern application interfaces there's no conceptual break at least in the main screens.
