If you're really committed to EDI, then writing your own translator is akin to writing your own accounting system or writing your own application framework. Why do it when there are so many others out there that do the job well. Also, as file specs change or if your EDI partner adds a new field that you were unaware of, more problems would arise.
I, personally, would never build my own translator, so therefore I have no experience if determining a cut off point for such an exercise.
