It should work for both, but I was thinking about a report field.
If you create your reports in text mode, you are more limited (less options for format), but on the other hand, it should be much easier to control many aspects of printing. For instance, it should be relatively easy to programmatically insert symbols for the lines, something similar to this:
Level 1
+ -- Level 1.1
+ -- Level 1.1.1
+ -- Level 1.1.2
+ -- Level 1.2
Better search for some other examples, as I don't quite remember how this is drawn.
