>>>The US roads are not bad - but not the best. And no, german highways are definately NOT the best - too much money is being "redistributed" and maintainance has been lagging for more than 15 years. The best roads I drove on were in south africa - wide, well maintained, ample for the amount of cars using them (last visit to SA in '99)... and I have been to quite a few places.

>>My most memorable road has been 101 up the California coast, particularly through Big Sur. At some points the speed limit is 15 mph and you wouldn't feel safe driving much faster. The highways in New Zealand are also very cool. Wide open spaces, well, unless you get stuck in a sheep traffic jam. (I'm not joking). I suppose my driving fantasy is a yellow Corvette convertible on the Autobahn. You have probably driven on it -- does it deserve the hype?

>My Autobahn experience is now a bit dated (mid '80's) but yes, it certainly was exhilarating back then. I had to travel about a 25 mile stretch for a couple of weeks while working there. Better than a cup of coffee in the morning!

>FYI, the new C6 Corvette was tested in Germany on the Autobahn (cruising at 187MPH). Don't think I'd be real interested in doing THAT in a convertible, though. ;)

When I had Vettes they didn't have a C5 or C6 edition. The garden variety model was plenty fast, though, theoretically topping out in the 150s. The fastest I ever had mine going was 128. The impressive part was it wasn't even breathing hard. 3500 rpm, something like that.
