In some ways, do you find working for a large company is like working for government? Things like:
- very established procedures for things such as hiring etc
- raises based on the type of work you do more than on how well you do it
- consensus decision making rather than top down

Totally illegal here too, but I was a dumb kid at the time and didn't pursue it. Despite my sudden depature the president felt personally responsible for me leaving (as he should have) and a year later they actually hired me for a few months to do some consulting while I was back in town looking for permanent work.
