If turn south from the a4 before cologne (a61??) you will have the usually less travelled autobahn, but miss out stretch frankfurt / darmstadt. If drive via cologne / frankfurt (a3), be certain to follow the speed limit downhill between Diez and Limburg EXACTLY - (100 KM/H on left and middle lane, 40 Km/H on the right lane for trucks) because this is germany's most lucrative radar trap. They have 6 slots to install cameras in 1 for each lane inside speed limit signs: for each lane on 2 consecutive signs spanning all lanes.

During the day most foreign drivers get the idea as everybody eles brakes just before those signs, but at night with nearly no traffic you often see those red flashes in front or in back <g>. Also don't speed up too much between the signs, as sometimes there are police cars waiting just for those...
