I like your ideas of scanning the cursor or array, but it may still take too long if the table is too big. We may be breaking the table into several smaller tables with fewer fields, but the same number of records. That may enable us to have acceptable performance with your ideas. Cetin's links were very helpful. It seems to me that FoxPro should have variables for GridRowNumber and IndexedRecordNumber. FoxPro seems to have GridRowNumber available for its own use, since the Grid.ActivateCell(nRow, nCol) method allows you to jump to any grid row, which means that FoxPro internally keeps track of row numbers. I just wish that it were available to us.
