>It's probably too late for that. The US economy is now highly dependent and increasing its dependence on exports and imports including capital. The standard of living of millions of voting Americans would be trashed if you closed the gates. It is sad but true that in a democracy, people vote to be able to drink pop and watch football on cable on their new TV, they don't vote to preserve the nation's wellbeing for their kids or grandkids.
