That's for our daughter who graduated recently (we have a fellow programmer!), and her sleeping habits (or lack thereof) make it quite impossible for her to notice the "AM" or "PM" designation on the clock after a long sit by the keyboard and a subsequent 10 hr catnap :). 18:30 on the display makes it quite clear that the red sky outside is a sunset, not a sunrise.

Interesting problem.
My watch does the 24-hour clock. Maybe you could buy one of these and create some lens to make it look nice and big at wake-up time.
It has 5 alarms too.
