When I was driving my old VW Golf Diesel with almost 750,000 km on it, the gear shift every so often would stick, and changing from 1st to 2nd gear or back could be a real fight. Believe me, I was glad of having my 'good' arm handling the gears.

>I guess it's a case of whichever you get used to first and/or most frequently is easier in the long run. I assume you did most of your first driving in Spain? To me it always seems strange, in a LH drive, "wasting" my good arm on the mundane task of finding an H-shaped gate when changing gear.

>>After passing my driving test I didn't drive for over a year (always had motorcycles). My first driving experiences where infrequent and I found it much easier to drive hire cars in Spain as I am right handed and found gear changing much easier with my right hand.

>>>From what I've seen of a lot of Americans' driving habits, from docu's etc., it seems that they use the wheel as a place to rest the wrist on, with the fingers dangling loose :-)

>>>Believe me, changing gear - even a left hand can do it in its sleep - and change the radio.
