Fortunately the successor has been picked and has been named the assistant director. She will then assume the directorship when the director retires. She is good, smart and fair and is willing to call bull when she sees it. What has disturbed me is that instead of standing up to the problem employee she has spearheaded accomodating him. Giving the private office, the new computer hardware... which is totally unlike her. I put this down to the fact that she is currently getting a masters degree in leadership and is trying to practice some of the new non-confrontatal skills that she has learned. I give her a year or so before she snaps and reads him the riot act.
