Clinton shot himself in the foot as well during the campaign. The difference was that the media didn't seize on it and turn it into a campaign busting issue the same way they did w/Dean and Hart. Dean's grrrrowl and Hart's affair could have been swept under the rug... or downplayed just as easily as Clinton's affair in '92. The media chose to do something differently that year.
But it does seem like the early Dem front runner tends to disappear behind some weird occurrence. Never tends to happen w/the GOP, though.
