>>I'm a rightie myself, but since I always tried to be a stereo type (working on two channels at a time), I thought being stupid in my left hand wouldn't be nice. So I practiced to do a few things to do with my left hand - like writing, making a ship out of a bus ticket (can do that with the right as well), using most of the tools (screwdrivers, saws, wrenches and pliers are OK, but I'm still somewhat dangerous with a hammer), using both hands equally while typing etc.

>>The writing was the hardest, but then it helped a lot. I found that it's easier to write left with a chalk than with a pen - and used it in my teaching years. Whenever I got into the nasty corner of the blackboard where I'd have to turn my back on the class while writing, I'd just put the chalk in my left hand and continue - so I could still keep my eyes on them.

>>Ah, and one thing that came handy is to be able to switch knife and fork. Sometimes there's an extra dish to pitch from, and it happens to be on my right (the table being cluttered with dishes). I just switch.

>>So, how many of you are capable of signing with your left? Switch knife and fork? Use spoon with your other hand?

Bill Lee, a lefthanded pitcher for the Red Sox in the 70s and 80s, liked to say that. (He was among a long line of Red Sox junkballers afflicted with sore arms, in his case the left. That was axiomatic with Red Sox pitchers until Roger Clemens came along). The other quote of his that sticks in my memory was about his manager in 1975: "Darrell Johnson has been falling out of trees all year long and landing on his feet." Lee was even cool enough to have a Warren Zevon song named after him.
