There was a smear campaign against McCain in South Carolina after he won a couple of early primaries in 2000. SC was a state McCain should have done well in, having a higher percentage of vets than any other state, and considering McCain was a war hero (unlike George "MIA in the Alabama National Guard"), but the whispering campaign worked. They effectively took McCain out of the race right there.
