In my town, Brighton, every year there is the vintage car rally, from London. There are loads of vintage cars and very few of them are American (the most prolific seems to be the de Dion "Bouton").

I imagine there were once far more cars on the streets of English cities than in the whole of America, but can't be sure. I think you may be confusing the invention of the automobile with the introductioon of Ford's "T" - the first mass manuf'd I think.
