Because of their novelty take on music, they don't have good staying power with fans. Crtics will write them off too. I once saw an interview with them during the downside of their first wave of popularity, the interviewer had made some snide comment about them being a flash in the pan novelty act... one of the guys said that they would go toe to toe with any muscian in terms of music ability.

Jason Priestly (a Canadian of 90210 fame) was doing a documentary of them as they began their long slide into obscurity from the top of the Candian charts. I was supposed to be about a Candian band struggling but not making it while on a tour of the US, but then they started to be played on radio and had more success than their first career.

I'll agree that their very good at writing lyrics and musicianship, but humours music (ie novelty music) is the kiss of death.
