Yes, I meant it figuratively. The capitalist system does depend on unemployment to keep wages low (competition for jobs rather than for employees) which benefits the military in enlarging the recruits pool.
Technically, rich kids are also a part of that pool but in fact few "take advantage" of the "opportunity". Meanwhile, for many (most?) poor kids, it's about the only way out of their predicament.
