So if the options are stored in the registry, does this mean I only have to specify them once for all the different development subdirectories I create? And is it also true that if I change an option anywhere, the change applies to all the development subdirectories?

There's only one set of options stored in the registry per each VFP version (VFP 9, VFP 8, e.t.c). VFP reads registry at startup time only, unless SYS(3056) forces re-read. Any changes you made in the options will be visible in the other VFP sessions started after that but not in the sessions already running.
